Frequently Asked Questions
Get your fire going: We’ve got the log-istics sorted!
About Our Logs
What types of logs do you supply?
We offer three lovely varieties of British kiln-dried hardwood: ash, oak and mixed hardwood logs. Ash is our favourite all-rounder for everyday fires, oak is wonderful for longer-lasting warmth, and our mixed hardwood offers a little of everything. Whichever you choose, your logs arrive carefully hand-packed in convenient 50 litre BurnBox box, ready to enjoy whenever you fancy lighting the fire.
Are your logs kiln-dried?
Yes, all BurnBox logs are carefully kiln-dried to a target moisture content of around 12%, with some even drier. We use residual heat from our nearby biomass plant to dry the wood, making good use of energy that might otherwise go to waste. Your logs arrive ready to burn, with no further seasoning needed. Just keep them somewhere dry until you’re ready to enjoy your fire.
Are BurnBox logs Ready to Burn certified?
Yes, all BurnBox logs are Ready to Burn certified, giving you confidence that you’re buying properly dried firewood. The certification requires a moisture content of no more than 20%, but we go further, kiln-drying our logs to a target of around 12%. That means less energy wasted evaporating water and more available for warming your home. Just remember that smoke-control rules also depend on your appliance.
Can I burn your logs straight away?
Absolutely! BurnBox logs arrive kiln-dried and ready to use, so there’s no need to leave them seasoning for months. Simply open your box, choose a few logs and get your fire going with some dry kindling and suitable firelighters. Once you’ve established a nice flame, add your hardwood logs and enjoy. Just follow your appliance’s instructions and keep any remaining logs somewhere dry.
What size are the logs?
Our logs are cut to lengths of between 20cm and 25cm, making them a practical size for many household wood burners, open fireplaces and outdoor fires. Because we’re working with natural British hardwood, the thickness and shape of individual logs will vary. If you have a particularly small stove, pizza oven or compact firebox, it’s always worth checking the manufacturer’s recommended log size before ordering.
How many logs are in a BurnBox?
Each 50 litre BurnBox contains roughly 20 substantial hardwood logs, although the exact number naturally varies depending on their shape and thickness. We pack every box by hand, carefully fitting the logs together to keep empty spaces to a minimum. Rather than selling by the number of pieces, we give you a generously filled box of good British firewood, making the most of every litre.
Ash or oak: which should I choose?
Choose ash if you love an easy-lighting fire with beautiful, lively flames and steady warmth. It’s our favourite all-round choice for everyday wood-burner use. Oak is denser and generally burns for longer once properly established, making it wonderful for extended evenings, fire pits and wood-fired cooking. Both are excellent British hardwoods, so it really comes down to the sort of fire you enjoy.
Which logs burn the longest?
Oak is generally our longest-burning hardwood, thanks to its dense, substantial nature. Once you’ve established a good fire, oak settles into a lovely, steady burn that makes it particularly enjoyable for longer evenings. Of course, the actual burning time depends on your stove, airflow and the size of each log. If you prefer something that lights more readily, ash is another wonderful choice.
Which logs give out the most heat?
Oak is a wonderful choice for sustained warmth because its dense structure means each substantial log contains plenty of fuel. Ash also provides excellent heat, with the added pleasure of a lively flame and easy lighting. Both are wonderfully warming when properly dried. The heat you’ll enjoy ultimately depends on your appliance, its efficiency and how you manage the fire, rather than simply the species of wood.
What’s the difference between kiln-dried and seasoned logs?
Kiln-dried logs are dried using controlled heat, while seasoned logs are left to dry naturally over time, often for many months. Both can make good firewood when properly dried, but kiln drying gives much greater control over the process. BurnBox hardwood logs are kiln-dried to a target moisture content of around 12%, so they arrive ready to burn without needing additional storage or seasoning.
What moisture content should firewood be?
Good firewood should have a moisture content of 20% or less, which is the maximum permitted under the Ready to Burn certification scheme. BurnBox logs are kiln-dried to a target of around 12%, with some even drier. This helps your fire burn more efficiently, rather than wasting energy evaporating excess water. For the best results, always keep your logs protected from rain and damp after delivery.
Are kiln-dried logs worth it?
We certainly think so, particularly if you enjoy a real fire but don’t have the room or patience to season your own wood. Kiln-dried logs arrive ready to burn, making lighting your fire wonderfully straightforward. Their low moisture content also means less energy is wasted evaporating water. With BurnBox, you can enjoy all that convenience in manageable 50 litre boxes, delivered whenever you need them.
Do BurnBox logs spit or spark?
BurnBox kiln-dried hardwood logs are carefully dried to reduce excess moisture, which can contribute to spitting and crackling. However, wood is a natural fuel, and even beautifully dried logs can occasionally produce sparks. It’s part of the character of a real fire! We always recommend using a suitable fireguard with open fireplaces and following your stove manufacturer’s safety instructions.
How are the logs packed?
Every BurnBox is packed by hand, with each log carefully fitted alongside the others to make the most of the available space. We don’t simply tip a pile of logs into a box and hope for the best! Our 50 litre cardboard boxes are designed to keep everything together neatly, with ventilation holes to allow air circulation. It’s a simple approach that helps us deliver a generously packed box of British hardwood.
Why is ash such a popular firewood?
Ash has long been known as the king of home fires, and it’s easy to understand why. It lights readily, produces beautiful, bright flames and settles into a lovely, steady warmth. It’s a dependable, easy-going hardwood that suits everyday fires beautifully. Our British ash is kiln-dried to a target moisture content of around 12%, so you can enjoy all those wonderful qualities straight from the box.
Why won’t my oak logs burn properly?
Oak needs a properly established fire to burn at its best. Because it’s such a dense hardwood, it can struggle if added to a weak flame or if your stove’s airflow is reduced too quickly. Start with dry kindling and smaller pieces, build a good bed of glowing embers, then add your oak logs. Keep sufficient airflow as they catch, following your stove’s instructions rather than allowing the fire to smoulder.
Is oak good for pizza ovens and fire pits?
Oak is one of our favourite hardwoods for pizza ovens and fire pits. Its dense structure provides sustained heat once the fire is established, making it particularly enjoyable for outdoor cooking and longer evenings around the flames. Start with dry kindling and smaller pieces before adding your oak. Always check that your oven or fire pit is designed for hardwood logs, and let firelighters burn away before cooking.
What’s in a box of mixed hardwood logs?
Our Mixed Hardwood BurnBox contains a lovely assortment of British hardwoods, predominantly ash, alongside other species depending on what’s available. Every box is a little different, which is part of its natural character. All the logs are kiln-dried to a target moisture content of around 12% and carefully hand-packed into our convenient 50 litre boxes. It’s an excellent everyday choice, and was our bestseller last winter!
Is mixed hardwood good for a log burner?
Absolutely! Our mixed hardwood is a wonderful everyday choice for wood-burning stoves. Predominantly ash, with a selection of other British hardwoods, it offers lovely flames, dependable warmth and excellent value. Every log is kiln-dried to a target moisture content of around 12%, so it’s ready to use when it arrives. Just check your stove’s recommended log size and follow its instructions for the best fire.
Ordering & Subscriptions
Do you only sell logs in boxes?
Yes, BurnBox specialises in delivering British firewood in convenient 50 litre cardboard boxes, rather than loose loads or enormous bulk bags. We wanted to make enjoying a real fire easier for people who don’t have space for a large log store. Each box is carefully packed by hand and delivered straight to your chosen address. Order one whenever you need it, or several if you have room to spare.
Can I place a one-off order?
Of course! You can order a single BurnBox whenever you fancy lighting the fire, without signing up for anything or making an ongoing commitment. Simply choose between ash, oak or mixed hardwood, and add any kindling, firelighters or matches you might need. It’s a lovely way to try our firewood and discover which variety you enjoy most before deciding whether regular deliveries would suit you.
Do you offer subscriptions?
Yes, our flexible BurnBox subscriptions make keeping your log supply topped up wonderfully simple, and you’ll save 10% on the standard product price too. Choose your favourite hardwood, decide how many boxes you’d like and select a delivery interval that suits your household. You can change, pause or cancel future deliveries whenever your needs change, so there’s no need to worry about receiving more logs than you can use.
How often can subscription deliveries be made?
BurnBox subscriptions can be arranged every one to six weeks, depending on how frequently you enjoy a fire. If your wood burner is going most evenings, you might prefer regular deliveries. If it’s just an occasional weekend pleasure, a longer interval could be ideal. You can always adjust the frequency as the seasons change, making it easy to keep a comfortable supply without filling your home with spare firewood.
Can I change, pause or cancel my subscription?
Absolutely. We believe subscriptions should make life easier, not tie you into something you no longer need. You can change your BurnBox delivery frequency, adjust quantities, pause your subscription or cancel future deliveries through your online account or by contacting us. Just make any changes before your next payment is taken. If an order has already been processed, get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.
How much does a BurnBox cost?
Our 50 litre BurnBox prices start at £29.95 for Mixed Hardwood, with British Ash at £32.95 and British Oak at £36.95. All prices include VAT. We also offer a 10% saving when you choose a regular subscription, making it even better value for those who enjoy frequent fires. Any applicable delivery charges are clearly shown at checkout, so you’ll know exactly what you’re paying before you order.
How much do I save with a BurnBox subscription?
You’ll save 10% on the standard one-off product price when you subscribe to regular BurnBox deliveries. It’s our way of making those cosy evenings by the fire a little more affordable. You can choose deliveries every one to six weeks and adjust, pause or cancel future orders whenever you need to. Your subscription price, including any applicable delivery charges, is clearly shown before you confirm.
What’s included in the BurnBox bundles?
Our BurnBox bundles bring together everything you need to enjoy a proper fire, without having to remember all the little extras. The Fire Starter Bundle includes a 50 litre box of hardwood logs, kindling, natural wood wool firelighters and safety matches. Our Double Bundle includes two boxes of logs with the same handy fire-starting essentials. Both offer a saving compared with buying everything separately.
Can I send a BurnBox as a gift?
Absolutely! A BurnBox makes a wonderfully thoughtful and practical gift for anyone who loves their wood burner, fire pit or pizza oven. Simply choose their favourite hardwood or one of our fire-starting bundles, then enter their address at checkout. It’s a lovely way to send someone the promise of a cosy evening. Just make sure there’s somewhere suitable and dry for the parcel to be delivered.
Can I have logs delivered to a different address?
Yes, you can have your BurnBox order delivered to any suitable UK address, even if it’s different from your billing address. Perhaps you’re sending a gift, stocking up the holiday cottage or arranging logs for a weekend away. Simply enter the correct delivery details at checkout. For holiday accommodation or shared premises, we’d recommend checking that someone can accept the parcel or provide a safe, dry delivery location.
Delivery
Do you deliver directly to my door?
Yes, BurnBox logs are delivered straight to your chosen UK address by DPD, using their carbon-neutral UK delivery service. There’s no need to collect a bulky load of firewood or arrange transport yourself. Your logs arrive neatly packed in manageable cardboard boxes, ready to tuck away somewhere dry. Just remember that this is a parcel delivery service, so carrying logs upstairs or stacking them indoors isn’t included.
Do I need to be home for delivery?
Not necessarily. DPD offers a range of delivery options, including leaving parcels in a suitable safe place where available. If you won’t be home, we’d recommend choosing somewhere secure, accessible and, most importantly, dry. Cardboard boxes and rain aren’t the best of friends! You’ll receive tracking information when your BurnBox order is despatched, allowing you to manage the delivery options available for your address.
Where do you deliver to?
We deliver BurnBox firewood throughout the UK, including the Scottish Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland. Most addresses can receive our convenient boxed logs directly through DPD, although some remote locations may have additional delivery charges or longer transit times. Simply enter your postcode at checkout to see the available options. If you’re unsure whether we can reach you, get in touch and we’ll happily help.
How long does delivery take?
BurnBox orders are typically delivered within two working days, so you shouldn’t have to wait long to enjoy your next fire. Orders placed before midday are usually despatched the same working day, subject to stock availability. You’ll receive DPD tracking information once your parcel leaves us. Remote locations and particularly busy periods can take a little longer, so we’d recommend ordering ahead if you’re planning a special evening or gathering.
Is delivery free?
Standard BurnBox delivery is free on one-off orders over £30, while smaller orders normally carry a £4.95 delivery charge. Standard delivery is also included in the displayed price of our regular subscriptions. Certain remote addresses or premium delivery options may attract additional charges. We always show the applicable delivery cost at checkout, so there are no surprises when it’s time to pay.
How big is the box, and will it fit through my door?
Each BurnBox contains 50 litres of carefully packed hardwood logs, making it a convenient alternative to loose deliveries or bulky bags. The boxes are designed to be manageable household parcels, but the external dimensions aren’t the same as their 50 litre capacity. If you have a particularly narrow doorway, awkward entrance or limited storage space, please contact us for the current packed dimensions before ordering.
When’s the last order date for Christmas, and when do you start despatching again?
Our final Christmas ordering date for 2026 is 16 December, with BurnBox despatches starting again on 4 January 2027. We always recommend ordering a little earlier if you’d like a good supply of logs for Christmas gatherings, especially if you live somewhere remote. Although DPD works hard to deliver promptly, occasional courier delays are possible, so leaving a little breathing room is always sensible.
Can you deliver to a boat mooring, campsite or holiday let?
Yes, BurnBox can deliver to boat moorings, campsites and holiday accommodation, provided DPD can safely access a recognised delivery address. It’s a wonderfully convenient way to have firewood waiting for a weekend away. Include the marina, campsite or property’s full address, along with any pitch or mooring details. We’d also recommend arranging for reception or your host to accept the parcel if necessary.
Do you deliver to the Scottish Highlands, islands or Northern Ireland?
Yes, we’re pleased to offer BurnBox deliveries to the Scottish Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland, as well as mainland UK addresses. Some locations may involve additional courier charges or take a little longer to reach. Enter your postcode at checkout to see what’s available. If you have a particularly remote address, please get in touch and we’ll do our best to find a suitable delivery arrangement.
Can I track my BurnBox delivery?
Absolutely! Once your BurnBox order has been despatched, you’ll receive full DPD tracking details so you can follow your logs on their journey to your door. Depending on the service available, DPD may also provide a delivery window and options to manage your parcel. If your tracking information hasn’t arrived, check your junk folder or contact us with your order number and we’ll happily help.
Do you deliver at weekends?
Yes, weekend deliveries are available through DPD. Sometimes standard parcels arrive on a Saturday or Sunday without an additional charge, which is always a pleasant bonus! However, if you specifically need your logs delivered at the weekend, a guaranteed weekend service must be booked and paid for where available. Contact us before ordering and we’ll help check the options for your postcode.
Why did my order arrive in a Natural Dog Food Company box?
Don’t worry, it’s definitely logs inside! BurnBox and the Natural Dog Food Company are sister businesses run by the same family. Whenever we can, we give perfectly good cardboard boxes from our dog food business a second life rather than throwing them away. It’s a simple way to reduce unnecessary packaging and make better use of our resources. Your BurnBox firewood is exactly what you ordered, whatever the outer box says.
Storage & Use
How should I store my logs?
Keep your BurnBox logs somewhere dry, sheltered and reasonably well ventilated until you’re ready to use them. A garage, utility room, covered log store or other dry storage space is ideal. Try to keep the cardboard box off damp floors and away from rain. And, of course, always leave a safe distance between stored firewood and your stove or fireplace. Look after your logs and they’ll look after your fire!
Can I store the logs indoors?
Yes, BurnBox kiln-dried logs are perfectly suitable for indoor storage, provided you keep them somewhere dry, ventilated and safely away from heat. A utility room, garage or suitable cupboard can work well, making our compact 50 litre boxes particularly useful for smaller homes. As with any natural timber, you might notice the occasional piece of bark or sawdust, but there’s no need for an enormous outdoor log store.
Are your logs suitable for open fires and wood-burning stoves?
Yes, BurnBox hardwood logs are suitable for open fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and compatible multi-fuel appliances designed to burn wood. They’re also lovely for suitable fire pits, chimineas and outdoor cooking. All our logs are kiln-dried and Ready to Burn certified. Just check your appliance’s fuel and log-size requirements, and remember that indoor wood burning in smoke control areas is subject to additional rules.
How much wood will I need?
As a rough guide, we find that a 50 litre BurnBox lasts around three full evenings of home wood-burner use. Naturally, every household is different. A large stove running for hours will use more than a smaller fire enjoyed after dinner. For outdoor fire pits, a box might last two or three smaller gatherings or one particularly long evening. Starting with a box or two is a lovely way to discover your own routine.
How many evenings will a box of ash logs last?
A 50 litre box of British ash logs will typically last around three full evenings, based on our own experience at home. It’s a useful starting point rather than a guaranteed burn time, as every stove and household is different. Ash lights readily and provides lovely steady warmth, making it ideal for regular fires. Once you’ve tried a box, you’ll soon get a feel for how often you need to reorder.
How many evenings will a box of oak logs last?
We suggest allowing roughly three full evenings from a 50 litre box of oak, based on our general home-use experience. Oak is a wonderfully dense hardwood that tends to burn for longer once established, although the number of evenings you’ll enjoy depends on your stove, airflow and how long you keep the fire going. It’s a lovely choice when you want sustained warmth through a chilly evening.
How many evenings will a box of mixed hardwood logs last?
Around three full evenings is a useful guide for one 50 litre Mixed Hardwood BurnBox, although your actual usage will depend on your stove and how long you enjoy each fire. Our mixed hardwood contains predominantly ash alongside other British hardwoods, giving you a lovely combination of flames and warmth. It’s a practical, good-value choice for regular fires, particularly if you enjoy lighting the stove several evenings a week.
How long do kiln-dried logs stay dry?
Properly stored kiln-dried logs can remain ready to burn for many months, or even longer. The important thing is keeping them protected from rain and damp, as wood can gradually absorb moisture again if stored poorly. BurnBox logs arrive kiln-dried to a target moisture content of around 12%. Keep them somewhere dry and ventilated, and they’ll be ready whenever you fancy settling down beside the fire.
Will BurnBox logs bring bugs or spiders into my home?
It’s very unlikely. BurnBox logs go through a kiln-drying process that kills insects present in the timber, and once dried, they’re stored inside our enclosed distribution centre until despatch, never left outside awaiting delivery. This greatly reduces the likelihood of unwanted little visitors arriving with your firewood. Of course, natural wood can never be guaranteed completely insect-free, particularly after handling and delivery, but we take sensible precautions throughout.
What’s the best wood for a pizza oven or fire pit?
Our British oak is our first choice for wood-fired pizza ovens and fire pits. It’s a dense hardwood that produces lovely sustained heat once the fire is established, making it wonderful for outdoor cooking and long evenings around the flames. Start with dry kindling and smaller pieces, then add your oak logs once you have a good fire going. Always check your appliance’s fuel requirements before use.
Will the logs fit in my pizza oven?
BurnBox logs measure between 20cm and 25cm long, making them suitable for many wood-fired pizza ovens. Our British oak is particularly lovely for pizza cooking because it provides sustained heat once properly established. However, pizza ovens vary considerably in size, and some compact models require smaller pieces. We’d recommend checking your oven’s maximum log length and fuel requirements before ordering, just to be sure.
How long does a box last on a fire pit?
A 50 litre BurnBox will generally provide enough firewood for two or three smaller fire-pit gatherings, or one lovely long evening around a larger fire. Naturally, the size of your fire pit, the weather and how frequently you add logs will all make a difference. If you’re planning a particularly special evening outdoors, having a spare box ready is never a bad idea!
Can I use BurnBox logs in a wood-fired hot tub?
Yes, all three varieties of BurnBox hardwood can be used in wood-fired hot tubs with heaters designed for burning logs. We particularly recommend oak, as its dense structure provides wonderfully sustained heat once the fire is established. Ash and mixed hardwood are also excellent choices. Just check your heater’s recommended fuel and log size, and remember that heating times depend on the tub, water temperature and weather.
Can I use BurnBox logs for a campfire or bushcraft?
Absolutely, provided fires and brought-in firewood are permitted where you’re staying. Our Mixed Hardwood BurnBox is a particularly good choice for camping and bushcraft, offering a lovely variety of British hardwoods in a convenient box that’s easy to transport and keep tidy. The logs arrive kiln-dried and ready to use. Always obtain the landowner’s permission, follow local fire restrictions and make sure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving.
Sustainability & Quality
Where does BurnBox wood come from?
BurnBox firewood is 100% British, sourced from responsibly managed UK woodlands and trusted suppliers, including the Forestry Commission and local tree surgeons. We’re based in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, where our family business carefully prepares and packs your orders. Our logs are kiln-dried using residual heat from our nearby biomass plant, then stored indoors until they’re ready to make their way to your home.
Are BurnBox logs environmentally friendly?
We work hard to make BurnBox as responsible as possible. Our British timber comes from managed woodland, and we use residual heat from our nearby biomass plant to kiln-dry the logs. Sawdust becomes poultry bedding, which is later returned to fields growing crops for the plant. We use recyclable cardboard, reuse suitable packaging and deliver through DPD’s carbon-neutral UK service. Burning wood still produces emissions, so using dry fuel responsibly matters too.
Do you add any chemicals or treatments to the logs?
No, BurnBox logs are simply natural British hardwood, cut, split and carefully kiln-dried without added preservatives, chemical treatments or accelerants. We believe good firewood doesn’t need anything complicated. Our ash, oak and mixed hardwood logs are ready to burn in suitable appliances, producing the warmth and character you’d expect from real wood. Just use appropriate kindling and firelighters rather than adding liquid fuels to get your fire started.
Is BurnBox wood British?
Yes, every BurnBox log is made from 100% British timber. We source our hardwood from responsibly managed UK woodlands and suppliers, including the Forestry Commission and local tree surgeons. Our family business is based in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, and we take pride in offering genuinely British firewood. The logs are carefully kiln-dried using residual heat from our nearby biomass plant before being packed and delivered directly to your door.
Is the BurnBox box recyclable?
Yes, our BurnBox log boxes are made from recyclable cardboard, so once you’ve enjoyed the last of your logs, you can simply flatten the box and place it in your cardboard recycling. We also believe in giving perfectly good packaging another use wherever possible, which is why some deliveries arrive in reused outer boxes from our sister business. Just keep the cardboard clean and dry, and follow your local council’s recycling guidance.
Can I burn BurnBox logs in a smoke control area?
Yes, BurnBox logs can be burned in a smoke control area if you have an appropriate exempt appliance approved to burn wood and use it according to its instructions. Our logs are Ready to Burn certified, but that doesn’t mean wood can be burned in an ordinary open fireplace within a smoke control area. Rules vary by location and appliance, so check with your local council before lighting your fire. Outdoor appliances may have different requirements.
